Aids Quit Panels on Display at JVL

NSU students working collaboratively with campus departments will bring six panels of the AIDS Quilt to NSU. World AIDS Day is an opportunity to remind students, staff, faculty and the Tahlequah community of the devastation caused by AIDS, to raise awareness that AIDS is still a global issue and to help students learn how to protect themselves. A formal unfolding ceremony is Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. in the UC Rozell Ballroom. Dr. Martin Tadlock, interim president is the keynote speaker. The unfolding kicks off a week of activities that includes display of the AIDS Quilt Panels in the John Vaughan Library, the College of Optometry, the RiverHawk Shoppe and HawkReach Counseling Services. There will also be activities that include education, awareness and fund-raising programs.

Veteran's Day

NSU Has many events today celebrating Veteran's Day. In the Libraries, there is a display at the NSU BA library and there are roll call names at each library.

What is the significance of this day?

From Wikipedia: It celebrates the armistice with Germany which was between the Allies and Germany and was an agreement that ended the fighting in the First World War. It was signed in a railway carriage in Compiègne Forest on 11 November 1918 and marked a victory for the Allies and a complete defeat for Germany, although not technically a surrender.

If you have heard of the 11th hour (which I believe means the very last opportunity), it comes from this signing:

"the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month"

Register for Census workshops

NSU libraries to host 2010 Census information workshops

"How to Use the 2010 Census" is Oct. 27 at the John Vaughan Library and on Nov. 3 at the NSUBA Library. Both workshops are 1-4 p.m. Presenter is Steve Beleu, regional depository librarian for federal government information for the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. The workshops will teach participants how to access new data from the 2010 Decennial Census and single- and multi-year estimates data from the American Community Survey. It will also briefly discuss the 2007 Economic Census and spotlight features of the Census home page. The workshop is free and registration is open to the public. Ebook founder dies

Michael S. Hart, the founder of Project Gutenberg passed away on 6 September. Hart, born in 1947, started Project Gutenberg in 1971 with the digitisation of the US Declaration of Independence, which Hart made available to other computer users at the University of Illinois - creating what was arguably the first "eBook".

Project Gutenberg was founded to distribute copyright-free eBooks free of charge. Currently, it offers more than 36,000 eBooks for download in variety of formats. Tens of thousands more eBooks are available through the project's network of national affiliates and other partners (works sometimes lapsing into public domain at different times in different jurisdictions).

Project Gutenberg's mission statement explains: "The mission of Project Gutenberg is simple: To encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks.

"This mission is, as much as possible, to encourage all those who are interested in making eBooks and helping to give them away...

The library is continuing the Textbook Reserve Program again this fall. We have two copies of the required textbooks for several courses on campus from Algebra to Communication to Spanish.

You can check the textbook out for free in the John Vaughan Library for three hours at a time. You'll need to show your id, and you can leave your textbooks at home. Come do your homework or quickly read over the required reading before class at the library!

John Vaughan Library is currently showcasing, on the first floor, the Japan Relief Display.

Pictured are Yukari Mishima, Avano Sato, Akane Ohashi, Mai Kobayashi, and Megumi Ozawa, students involved in the creation of the display who are working with the Public Relations Committee of the library to continue showcasing the display following the concert.

Earth Day 2011

Earth Day Network's Billion Acts of Green campaign inspired the design of the Earth Day 2011 poster. The campaign is organized around personal and organizational pledges to live and act sustainably. The goal is to register one billion acts before the Earth Summit in 2012. You can help reach the goal by pledging your act of green at http://act.earthday.org/.

The NSU John Vaughan Library will sponsor a variety of events to help students, faculty, and staff Go Green this Earth Day Week, April 18-22, 2011. Library events will take place in or near the South Lobby of the Library. They are included on the Earth Day 2011 Activity List. The list was compiled by the NSU Committee for Sustainability and provides coverage of all campus-wide events and sponsoring groups April 16-30, 2011.

Books, DVDs, and exhibits on display in the South Lobby of the Library are included on the Reading List. The materials are located in the John Vaughan Library collection, and most are available for borrowing. During this Earth Day celebration, and each day, please deposit your recyclables in bins located around campus and throughout the library.

Women's History Month @ The Library

Over sized posters contributed by Graduate Student Heather Emery of Dr. Melissa Strong's Introduction To Women's & Gender Studies course depicting notable women of history greeted library patrons at both the north and south entrances along with a historical time line, interactive quiz to test your knowledge, and book display relating to Women's History all located in our library lobby at the south entrance. If you haven't had the chance, feel free to take a moment and visit us before the end of the month brings an end to these displays.

Displays include a historical time line, portrayals of people that have made contributions to African American history, a collection of documents, and a table of books available for check out.

Dr. Melissa Strong's African American Writing class worked with the Public Relations Committee for the library to bring the exhibits for Black History Month to life. Graduate students Casey Cobb, Heather V. Emery, Jenni Love, and Katheryn Sheridan are responsible for contributing and displaying the over sized posters in the lobby. Students and Patrons are invited "to take a moment to view the posters and learn about our common American history."

History of Hanukkah
The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah or Chanukah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, which means "dedication" in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or December. Often called the Festival of Lights, the holiday is celebrated with the lighting of the menorah, traditional foods, games and gifts.

History of Christmas
Christmas is both a sacred religious holiday and a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon. For two millennia, people around the world have been observing it with traditions and practices that are both religious and secular in nature. Christians celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, a spiritual leader whose teachings form the basis of their religion. Popular customs include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to arrive. December 25–Christmas Day–has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1870.

History of Kwanzaa
Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University, Long Beach, created Kwanzaa in 1966. After the Watts riots in Los Angeles, Dr. Karenga searched for ways to bring African-Americans together as a community. He founded US, a cultural organization, and started to research African "first fruit" (harvest) celebrations. Karenga combined aspects of several different harvest celebrations, such as those of the Ashanti and those of the Zulu, to form the basis of Kwanzaa.

NSU Libraries closed for Thanksgiving

Pumpkin Cheesecake
Serves 12

1 1/4 cups gingersnap cookie crumbs (crush about 20 cookies in a plastic bag with a rolling pin)
1/4 cup unsalted butter -- melted
3 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese -- softened
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 (16 ounce) can pumpkin puree (NOT pumpkin pie filling)
4 eggs
3/4 cup chilled whipping cream (need to whip it with 2 teaspoons sugar and a teaspoon of vanilla)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

In a large mixing bowl, mix the cookie crumbs and butter. Press evenly on the bottom of a 9" spring form pan inches. Bake 10 minutes, then let cool.

Reduce oven temp. to 300 degrees.

In another large bowl, beat the cream cheese, sugar, the cinnamon and ginger on medium speed until smooth. Add pumpkin puree. Now add in the eggs, one at a time on low speed. Pour into the cookie crumb pie shell.

Bake your cheesecake until center is firm, about 1 1/4 hours. Cool to room temperature. Cover and refrigerate at least 3 hours. (but in your case, you did it two days prior at least)

To loosen cheesecake from the sides of the pan, unbuckle the side and carefully remove. Serve a dollop of whip cream on the cheesecake.

This recipe is to die for!

APA-MLA citation workshop slated at NSU's Vaughan Library

The John Vaughan library reference department, in collaboration with the Writing Center-Tahlequah, presents a workshop on "How to Cite Resources Using APA and MLA Style."

The American Psychological Association and the Modern Language Association utilize referencing styles accepted in academic prose and scholarly publishing. The APA makes reference citations using parenthetical referencing within the text. MLA style uses footnotes or endnotes and a bibliography.

The workshop is Sept. 14th, from 2-3 p.m. in Room 105 of the John Vaughan Library. Presenters are master tutors Tiffany Biggers and Cat Jennings of the Writing Center-Tahlequah.

"The Writing Center is limited in space, so the John Vaughan Library is happy to provide the venue for such an important workshop that should be beneficial to many students," said Sarah Brick Archer, assistant professor of user services for the library. "Students are frequently frustrated by trying to create citations in the proper format for their papers, and we want to make that process easier for them. The library is here to help students succeed with research and writing."

OHSLA to hold spring meeting on Muskogee campus

The Oklahoma Health Sciences Library Association spring meeting, "Partnering to Provide Healing Hands," is May 7 from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the Conference Center at NSU-Muskogee.

Librarians and library managers from hospitals, medical schools and other health science facilities in Oklahoma will attend.

Presentations by faculty from the NSU College of Science and Health Professions and the College of Optometry will focus on the impact of the health workforce shortage in Oklahoma and how NSU is establishing partnerships with multiple entities to improve health care delivery and outcomes in northeastern Oklahoma.

Presentations are scheduled from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., followed by OHSLA business meetings in the afternoon. For more information contact Sandra Martin at marti004@nsuok.edu or (918) 444-3263.

Yes, that is 24 hours a day from Sunday May 9th until Friday.

Thursday, April 22, 2010 – 9am to 4pm

NSU John Vaughan Library will host a variety of information venues to help students, faculty and staff Go Green this Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, 2010. All venues will be in or near the John Vaughan Library south lobby from 9 am to 4 pm.

• Earth Day Videos will be streamed on the big screen TV in the south lobby 9 am to 4 pm.

• Going Green Information Booths will be hosted by local area government and community environmental groups from 11 am to 4 pm. Representatives from Tahlequah Farmers Market, Sustainable Tahlequah, Oklahoma Conservation Commission, Sparrow Hawk Gardens, the City of Tahlequah, and the United Keetoowah Band Environmental Department will be among the featured presenters.

• Re-Sculpt Contest Winner will be announced at 2pm.

• Earth Day Prize Drawing at 4 pm

Earth Day Contest

The Earth Day RE-SCULPT Contest! Calling all NSU artists to create recycled sculptures to be displayed at John Vaughan Library in celebration of Earth Day.

* Open to all NSU Faculty/Staff and Students, you can submit as an individual or in teams of 2-4 people.
* Must be at least 75% recycled materials, NO GLASS.
* All materials used must be clean of food remnants.
* NO paint is allowed, painted materials are not recyclable.
* No sharp edges.
* Sculpture must be able to stand on it's own and all parts must be secure. Library is not responsible for any damage that may happen to it while on display.
* Size is limited to 3 feet wide by 3 feet deep and 4 feet tall.
* All Sculptures should be family-friendly.

Professor of Art Lance Hunter will be judging the sculptures. Works will be judged on originality, how creatively the materials are used, and overall aesthetic quality. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize will be awarded to the top winners, and an interview with the Northeastern and/or The Tahlequah Daily Press. Works need to be delivered to the John Vaughan Library between 1-5 pm on Tuesday April 20th. For further information call 444-3235.

Founder's Day 2010

In celebration of Northeastern State University's Founders Day 2010, the university added 10 names to its list of NSU Centurions. Founders Day commemorates the day the Oklahoma legislature purchased the Cherokee National Female Seminary and created the Northeastern State Normal School on March 6, 1909.

This year’s Centurions were honored during a special luncheon held Friday, March 5 in the University Center Rozell Ballroom in Tahlequah.

University Archives, Vickie Sheffler and Brenda Cochran, helped make the event a success by providing historic pictures. They made portraits of each recipient, made table displays, brought pictures from last year's event, and contributed over 100 photos to the video display. Good work Vickie and Brenda!

John Vaughan Library TV Policy

1. The TV will be turned on at the discretion of User Services staff and the Director of the Library.
2. If the TV is simply left on, it should be left on CNN Headline News, except in the event of bad weather or highway conditions. In these instances, local channels are acceptable, regardless of programming. The University Channel is also acceptable.
3. User Services staff may change the channel for major sporting events (SuperBowl, World Cup, Olympics etc.) at the request of patrons and with the approval of the Director of User Services or the Director of the Library.
4. All other changes determined at the discretion of User Services staff and the Director of the Library. Supervisor(s) must determine if the change will negatively affect other patrons in or near the Lobby.

Information Literacy - Survey results

Library presentation spotlights information literacy research

NSU faculty and staff are invited to attend a research presentation at the John Vaughan Library in Special Collections on the second floor on Dec. 4, 1:30-2:30 p.m.

The research was a cooperative multi-university initiative to assess and organize the improvement of information literacy skills among university students in Oklahoma. The program was funded through a planning grant from AT&T and was conducted through seven participating Oklahoma universities.

A catered dessert and fruit bar will be available to attendees after the brief presentation.

Making the presentation are Dr. Adrianna Lancaster, library director at East Central University, and Tom Messner, library director at NSU-Broken Arrow. For more information contact Messner at messner@nsuok.edu or (918) 449-6452.

Scholastic Book Fair is back

It's time again to buy books from the Scholastic Book Fair at the John Vaughan Library on the Tahlequah campus.

Lots of books are available, especially children's titles, board books, and cookbooks. This is a great opportunity to stock up for student teaching in the spring or for presents for the upcoming holidays.

The book fair is open at the North doors of the Library on Monday through Thursday from 10 am until 6 pm. On Friday we are open 10 am until 5 pm. November 9th-13th.

NSU Libraries to host Fahrenheit 451 discussions

The NSU Libraries invite all NSU faculty, staff and students to participate in informal book discussions of Ray Bradbury's classic novel, Fahrenheit 451, on Oct. 23, noon to 1 p.m. on all campuses.

These discussions are among the simultaneous community-wide experiences promoting literary reading across northeastern Oklahoma as part of the 2009-2010 Big Read program.

Brandon Oberg will lead a discussion of Fahrenheit 451 in the John Vaughan Library Lobby.

In Muskogee, Ben Etemad will lead a discussion in the NSU Muskogee Library.

In Broken Arrow, Dr. Barbara Ray and Zac Thorp will lead discussions in the Sip and Surf café in Building A.

Free copies of the novel, reader guides and bookmarks are available in the libraries while supplies last.

The Big Read is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in cooperation with Arts Midwest.

Writing tutor available at John Vaughan Library

The John Vaughan Library announces a new free service for students – a writing tutor. This service provides students with writing assistance during some of the library’s evening and weekend hours.

The library writing tutor, Jaquetta Shade, works as a library technician part-time and has completed the same tutor training required of the University Writing Center tutors. She is trained and experienced in helping students with every step of the writing process.

Services offered include: MLA & APA formatting, citations, researching and exploring topics, organizing ideas and writing mechanics and grammar.

Shade collaborates with the Writing Center to uphold the same tutoring standards offered in its facility.

Walk-ins are accepted Monday 8-11 p.m., Tuesday 9-11 p.m., Thursday 4-8 p.m. and Sunday 6-8 p.m.

NSU Libraries joins Big Read Oct. 6-7

Imagine a world where reading is banned… a world where mountains of books, burning in an endless inferno, are destroyed by professional firefighters.

Ray Bradbury’s classic Fahrenheit 451, set in a not-so-distant future, hits home when statistics show that less than half of Oklahomans are reading literary works.

The Big Read, funded through the National Endowment for the Arts, and Arts Midwest, shines a ray of light on Oklahoma for national literacy awareness and the literary arts.

From Sept. 26 through Oct. 31, the program reaches northeast Oklahoma through participating community colleges, universities, public libraries, schools and civic organizations.

Northeastern State University-Broken Arrow Director of Library Services Tom Messner said, “The Big Read has 268 communities nationwide participating in the program this year. This wonderful program provides us with a unique shared reading experience as we freely distribute and discuss high quality literature throughout our communities.”

The literary showcase in northeast Oklahoma is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. A disturbing and commanding story, Bradbury takes readers into a world, paralleling ours, where society has gone awry. The government condemns learning and firemen burn books instead of putting out fires.

The citizens in this future are docile, over-exposed to media and ambivalent toward their political surroundings. The book’s theme taps our society’s issues of illiteracy, censorship and the saturation of media and technology.

Schools and libraries will on be on the same page discussing the book in a mass community-driven book club. During October, libraries will screen the movie based on the book, along with (while supplies last) books, reader’s guides, and sound recordings featuring Bradbury’s work.

School libraries will encourage reading and community involvement with a writing and poster contest. Participants will submit a poster interpreting what they learned though the book and program; and writers will submit an essay on their experience.

Students of all ages may participate. Residents of surrounding communities are encouraged to attend and be active in the Big Read. The program aspires to show the value of books to today’s youth.

Bradbury once said, “You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.”

New Library Database

The collection consists of a database of the sound recordings in the Naxos record label catalog including Naxos Audiobooks. The new database provides access to over 521,985 music files from more than 36,556 CDs of music and more from the complete Naxos cataloges. The Naxos labels cover the full breadth of classical music throughout the ages, international jazz recordings, and world music. Most recordings come with scholarly notes that have been written by respected musicologists. Additional text content includes the lives and works of the greatest composers; history and explanations of classical music and instruments; history, explanations, synopses, and libretti of operas; glossaries, and pronunciation guide. Music can be searched by genre, composer, country, title, period, year of composition, instrument, music category, name of artist/performing group, or a combination of these criteria. Faculty can create and edit playlists that can be made available to students.

Headphones are available for checkout

Naxos Music Library is streamed. It is not possible to download or burn to CD any music on Naxos Music Library

“Get Ready for the 2010 Census”

In this hands-on workshop we will be learning how to use the American Fact Finder search engine that you will use to access 2010 Census data, and how to access and use the current “multiyear estimates” that are available now for all geographies of over 20,000 population, and that will become available for all populations from 50 to 20,000 after the 2010 Census. We will focus on data and maps that feature Oklahoma.
The workshop will be lead by Steve Barker from the Oklahoma Department of Commerce on Thursday, September 10th from 1pm-4pm in the NSU John Vaughah Library computer lab (room 105).

John Vaughan Library gets new sign

The Library got a new sign as part of new signage going up all over campus. Unfortunately, it contains a common misspelling of the name "Vaughan".

John Samuel Vaughan was the 9th President of Northeastern State University from 1936-1951. Under his leadership, the first free standing library building was built on the Tahlequah Campus.

From Northeastern: Centennial History by Dr. Brad Agnew:

Vaughan began his new duties immediately and welcomed the students at the first assembly of the school year on Wednesday, September 9 [1936], urging them to have a “friendly college” and to “smile and speak to everyone.” Throughout his entire administration, Vaughan emphasized the “friendliness” of Northeastern, and promoted the school as “The Friendly College.”

From the University Catalog: JOHN VAUGHAN LIBRARY. Originally constructed as a two-story building in 1948 and expanded to three stories in 1966, this building was renovated in 1996. The buildings electrical and telecommunications infrastructure has been updated and expanded to serve the demands of information technology. With 120,000 square feet of space, seating for 600, 60 publicly accessible computer workstations and terminals, and more than 50,000 feet of linear shelf space, the John Vaughan Library meets the American Library Association/Association of College and Research Libraries space and seating standards. The east wing of the library, renovated in 1998, houses the library archives and university records and the office of Assessment Services.
