Find Quick Facts Using the Reference Collection

The first stop for conducting research and utilizing the library is the Reference Desk. Professional librarians skilled in the use of print and Internet information resources are available at the first floor Reference Desk. Reference faculty may be consulted at the Reference Desk during the day on weekdays. Or ask for help at first floor service desks.

The Reference collection includes research services available through the library Web site, a wide range of print indexes, and a substantial collection of reference books.

If you are looking for dictionaries, encyclopedias, short biographies, lists of things on different topics, statistics or indexes to find information; check the Reference collection on the first floor of the John Vaughan Library, behind the counter in the Muskogee Library, or in the middle of the floor by the computers in the BA Library.

Reference Department

Seven professional reference librarians and two paraprofessionals are
available to assist in fulfilling the information needs of on-site and
remote Library users.  They may be consulted for finding information,
developing research strategies, providing instruction on the use of print
and electronic information resources, utilizing the Internet as a research
tool, and locating research material.  Reference resources include
a variety of Web-based services, CD-ROM products, print indexes, and a
substantial collection of reference books.  The reference desk may
be reached by telephone at 918.456.5511, extensions 3240 or 3241.

A good place to start with Library research is the Online Tutorial page from this page you can select online tutorials (use the Flash player) to learn about many library topics.

You could start with the Physical overview of the library and its services, you can learn about the Library web pages, you can learn about Ejournals in the library or you can learn some new tricks for searching Google.

The library currently has over 70 modules for online use called CLIP or
Cooperative Library Instruction Project.  A group of these
tutorials is used in the Campus Connections freshman class.  The
Library also offers an online class, LIBM 4611, Electronic Information
Retrieval that uses 23 modules to teach research in the Library.

1. The Library has many DVDs and VHS
movies for your use.  Many are for classroom use, but we have some
feature films also.  These circulate for 7 days.  Check the Library Catalog under the subject Feature Films for a list or check the lists here:  DVDs  --  VHS 

2. Need articles for a research paper?  Try some of our ejournal indexes: EBSCOHost and the Academic Search Premier
database.  You will find online articles from thousands of
publications in these databases.  Here's a sample of one article

3. Borrowing Privileges

Circulating items may be checked out by students and faculty/staff who present a valid NSU or photo ID. Guests may also check out materials by becoming a special borrower of the library. A Social Security number and second form of ID are required for this service.

Visit the Library Café

A variety of sandwiches, snacks, and beverages are available at the library café, located at the circulation desk. Cash and meal points are accepted at the café; checks and credit cards are not.

Other Library services of interest:

• PC's for your use: The Library has a number of computers on first floor for open student use. There are plans to add more on second floor this year.
  

  The Library computers give you the same access as computers in the NET building. You can also use Library electronic resources on these computers.

• Reserve materials: Your classes may require that you read materials placed on Reserve. The Reserve area is located on the North end of the first floor. There are many printed materials here that generally check out for 2 hours in the Library. There are also many items that have been placed on Electronic Reserve. You can read these items from anywhere and any time of day. Use the search form to search for your professor or class number to retrieve Electronic Reserves.
• Printing in the Library: Students are provided a 400 page print limit in the library at the start of each semester. If a student runs out of pages, additional pages may be purchased at the circulation desk for $5.00 for 100 pages or 5 cents per page.

Explore the John Vaughan Library on the Tahlequah campus.

On the First floor you can find the big, comfy couches and lots of issues of magazines and newspapers.

First floor houses the lastest issues of over 160 magazines arranged by title from "21st Century" to "Yoga" -- with titles like People, Seventeen and Vibe in between. This is only about 10% of the titles received in the library. You can sit and browse these magazines. Older issues can be found on second floor.

The latest issue of each newspaper is also found on the first floor. Here are some we receive, you may find your local hometown paper on the list. Only the ones indicated come on the day they are published, the rest come in the mail.
