NSU Libraries: The Big Read Literacy Campaign
On Mar. 4 Northeastern State University will host a film screening of Legends of Earthsea, which will serve as the kick-off event for a two-month long series of events sponsored through The Big Read. The screening will take place in the Auditorium of the Administrative Service Building on the Broken Arrow campus from 6 to 8 p.m. and will be available to view at Webb Auditorium in Tahlequah via ITV.
The program will utilize NSU-Broken Arrow’s Reading Clinic with events such as read-alouds, fantasy-themed arts and crafts projects and bulletin board displays.
The Big Read, which aims to engage all age groups within a community, will utilize several locations in Broken Arrow, Tahlequah, Tulsa and Muskogee for events as well. Events will include crafting events, writing workshops, film screenings, and book discussions and clubs, presentations, festivals, jewelry making workshops, a mini-convention at Wizard’s Asylum, and an Earth Day event.
As part of the Big Read, on Mar. 25 and 26, NSU will host fantasy author Jim Butcher during a book discussion.
Butcher, who is a New York Times best-selling author known for his contemporary fantasy book series The Desden Files, will lead a discussion on the themes of Ursula Le Guin’s classic novel A Wizard of Earthsea. LeGuin’s novel will serve as the subject of the program, and all events following the kick-off event will carry themes from Le Guin’s novel. For those in attendance, Wizard of Earthsea readers’ guides and other material to promote literary reading will be available at no cost.
For those in the Tahlequah community, the discussion will take place March 25 with two convenient times for community members to choose from, 1-2 p.m. or 6-7 p.m. in Webb Auditorium. Those on the Broken Arrow campus can attend the kick-off event from 1-2 p.m. or 6-7 p.m. on March 26 in the Auditorium of the Administrative Services Building.
