SCS SHOWCASE 2009
A modest but appreciative crowd attended the inaugural Student Creativity Showcase hosted by NSU Libraries on April 22, 2009 where eight NSU students were recognized for their recent creative endeavors. The honored works included a diversity of projects: painting, sculpture, choropleth map, American Indian traditional dance, an original graphic novel, and two informative speeches.
Co-Chair of the event, Kathleen McCay, noted, "While creativity is readily recognized as an imperative component of the fine arts, it is rare that creativity is recognized and honored as an imperative component of worthy social and hard-science projects, such as NSU Libraries did with this event."
The event itself was a creative, multi-media production in which you-tube-like videos, co-produced by library staff and the honored students, were shown during the awards ceremony. This afforded attendees the opportunity to experience the projects first-hand. These videos can be viewed at http://library.nsuok.edu/
SCS committee members conceived of this event as a great way to introduce people to and engage them in the ever-changing role of library services. "The role of the library has changed far beyond books, bricks and mortar," McCay said, "Today's libraries are multi-dimensional. They provide an electronic hub through which students can explore the knowledge of others, as well as a place where students can create and share their own discoveries, thereby participating in scholarship by adding to the knowledge base."
Dr. Sheila Collins, Executive Director of Libraries at NSU, is already planning for next year's SCS event. Inquiries regarding nomination information and selection criteria for the 2010 Showcase should be directed to Dr. Sheila Collins (x3211), or Kathleen McCay (x3266).
