Learning about Plagiarism

The Library has two tutorials on plagiarism in the research process.

Plagiarism is defined as:

transitive verb : to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own : use (another's production) without crediting the source

intransitive verb : to commit literary theft : present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source (Webster 2006)

Ways to Learn at the Library

Research Strategies

There are different ways to learn about Research Strategies in the Library. You can attend a class taught by librarians, you can ask at the Reference/Information Desk, or you can take one of our tutorials. Library tutorials are written to run with a program called, Flash. You will need the Flash 8.0 plug in for your computer to run these modules.

What's on Third Floor of the Library?

We have been looking at the arrangement of the main library (John Vaughan Library) in Tahlequah. Similar collections are located in the other libraries of NSU. For example, each library has a circulating book collection. Muskogee has over 1,000 books that circulate, Broken Arrow has over 6,000 books and Tahlequah has over 250,000 books that circulate.


The Main Collection contains approximately 400,000 volumes of the library book collection and is located on the third floor.

These books support the curriculum, class assignments, research projects, or recreational reading. Main Collection books can be checked out and are indexed in the online catalog.

The call number system used in the library is the Library of Congress (LC) Classification System. The letters stand for broad topical areas and are arranged alphabetically.

What is on second floor in the library? Part 2

On the North Side of Second Floor you will find two collections.

1. SPECIAL COLLECTIONS contains particular materials relating to the history and culture of the Cherokee Indians, other tribes of Oklahoma and the state of Oklahoma, with emphasis on the Northeastern Oklahoma region.

Special Collections houses materials relating to the history and founding of NSU which has roots in early Cherokee education. The books housed in Special Collections are found through the online catalog.

Indexes to the uncataloged materials are available in Special Collections, and staff members are always present to assist those who wish to use the resources in the area.

2. Next to Special Collections you will find, CURRICULUM MATERIALS

Curriculum Materials is located on the second floor and is designed to provide support to the teacher education program. It includes:
sample textbooks (for K-12)
teaching aids
teacher's manuals
tests
kits
curriculum guides
videocassettes
charts
posters
computer disks
sound recordings

No college textbooks or methods books are available in Curriculum Materials.
All materials in the collection (except the current uncataloged Oklahoma Textbook Review Center materials) may be checked out for 21 days. Oklahoma state adopted textbooks are the main part of the collection. Curriculum materials are indexed in the Online Catalog.

What is on second floor in the library?

Let's look at the North side of second floor of the John Vaughan Library in Tahlequah.

The majority of the floor contains magazines and periodicals.  Do you wonder what the difference is between a magazine and a journal?  Do you have an assignment to use a scholarly journal?  Check this guide to find the way to tell the difference:  Journals vs. Magazines



On this floor you will find:

• Newspapers older than today on shelves on the south side near the atrium windows.  These are kept for 3-6 months and are arranged alphabetically.


• Microfilm newspapers, like The New York Times back to 1857, the Wall Stree Journal and other newspapers.  These are located next to the loose issues in the cabinets against the south wall.


• Microfilm of periodicals (magazines and journals).  These are older issues of magazines and journals (usually 1975-2000, however, some are current).  These are arranged by call number so you will need to use the online catalog to locate a particular title.  Microfilm reader printers are available for your use.


• The magazine journal collection.  Many shelves of materials are arranged by call number.  You will find recent loose issues on the shelves next to issues that have been bound in volumes.


• Government periodicals.  These issues are on separate shelving on the southeast side of the atrium wall.

How do I find what I want?

1. Look up your topic first in indexes - like Ebscohost


2. After you know what title, issue and year you are looking for, check the online catalog to see where to find the issue


3. If the online catalog says the issue is in PERIODICALS--2ND FLOOR, you will find it on 2nd floor.  If it says MICROFILM, it will be in the cabinets.


4. Be sure the write down the call number to find most materials on second floor.

In Broken Arrow and Muskogee you will find the same resources on a smaller scale. You will find loose newspapers, bound and loose periodicals. However, you will only find microfilm and older issues in Tahlequah. This does not mean you can't have access in Broken Arrow and Muskogee. Ask the librarian at your library to get what you need through document delivery.

Who Stays in the Library Overnight?

Who is this?  A student who stayed too long at the Library?  No.  The Reserve Area on the 1st floor of the John Vaughan Library houses many objects that help Optometry and Anatomy students with class assignments.  Our artificial skeleton is a learning object and sometimes takes some ribbing.

Visit Reserve for class assignments or use scanned documents on Electronic Reserve.

You can check our new book shelves which are usually updated on a weekly basis on the first floor of the John Vaughan Library.

We also put new Government Publications on a special shelving area on the first floor of the John Vaughan Library.


From the Library Webpages, you can find new books in every location in the library sorted by location and call number.   This file shows materials in Reference, Special Collections, Y Collection, Muskogee, Broken Arrow, Periodicals, and the Main circulating collection.  It is updated at the beginning of each month and shows books added to the collections during the last month.

Other files, from our Library Catalog, show materials added at Tahlequah and Broken Arrow sorted by title.  These files are also generated at the beginning of the month and show titles added during the previous month.

About periodicals in the library

The periodicals collection consists of magazines, journals, and newspapers that are published at regular intervals. Newsweek and Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry are examples.

Current issues of popular magazines and newspapers are located on the first floor in the browsing area. These are arranged alphabetically by title. The periodicals are located on the second floor. Bound and loose issues are arranged by call number on the shelves, while microforms are arranged by call number in file cabinets. Newspapers on microfilm are filed in cabinets alphabetically and chronologically.

Finding periodicals and articles

Titles are indexed in the online catalog. Each has a holdings note which provides a summary statement of the volumes owned for that particular title. Articles within periodicals can be found by using the various specialized indexes.
