Welcome to a new online journal

NSU Libraries would like to welcome a new online journal, Southwest Journal of Cultures. The journal will launch September 8th and is edited by two NSU professors, Dr. Bridget Roussell Cowlishaw and Dr. Brian Cowlishaw.



Look for a book review by our Co-coordinator of Reference and Resource Coordinator for the College of Business and Technology, the Department of Social Sciences, and Administration.

Articles online versus print?

What is the difference between the articles online and the ones on second floor, and which ones are better?

Answer: From Sarah Brick Archer, Reference Librarian: The online articles can be in various formats such as ASCII, HTML or PDF files taken from the print periodicals (like the ones on second floor). The PDF file is an exact duplicate of the print journal article. The html file is a text only file and may exclude photographs, charts or graphs. The PDF file and the print article should be equal in value.

How do I find a peer reviewed article?

As in the previous question, select an appropriate database from the Subject Database page. Look for a way to limit the search to peer reviewed. In Academic Search Premier (a good general index to journals), under “limit your search,” there is a button to check for “scholarly (peer reviewed) journals.”

Try a New Database

Do you use only one of our databases? Try a new one: WilsonWeb OmniFile - It provides the complete content (indexing, abstracts, and full text) from six of Wilson's full-text databases including Education Full Text, General Science Full Text, Humanities Full Text, Readers' Guide Full Text, Social Sciences Full Text, and Wilson Business Full Text. Also includes full-text articles from five additional periodical databases when available. WilsonWeb OmniFile covers over 2700 periodicals, with over 1300 with titles in full text.

It works especially well for Education topics.

Why are there so many different databases?

Why are there so many different databases, and how can a patron use them? They seem confusing and hard to figure out.

Answer: Many of the databases cover specific fields or disciplines. Our databases were selected to support the curriculum at NSU. One database can not contain all of the information that is published. It would also be an unwieldy and difficult database to search. A good general journal index is Ebsco’s Academic Search Premier. A good magazine database is Ebsco’s Masterfile Premier.

For specialized databases, use the Subject Database listing. Use the search guides and help screens on the database. For further assistance, ask the librarian that works with that discipline.
